Description
A unique fast drying spirit based stain which allows the full clarity of the timber grain to show through after staining. A versatile stain, Prooftint can be mixed to create your own custom shade or to achieve an exact colour match for your timber. If a soft milky appearance is desired Prooftint can be added to Feast Watson Liming Solution to produce a range of pastel shades.
We recommend Prooftint is reduced with Prooftint Colour Reducer when staining large areas such as bench tops, to allow more time to evenly distribute the stain and achieve a uniform appearance. Prooftint can be added to Prooftint Colour Reducer at any mixing ratio. Darker colours can be obtained with additional coats or by adding more Prooftint to the mix. For lighter shades dilute further with Prooftint Colour Reducer.
If desired, Prooftint can be used neat as long as the timber is sealed prior to staining. Refer to Surface Preparation for instructions.
As with all of our stains we recommend testing the colour on an offcut prior to staining the timber. Note that the finishing clear coat will fully develop the final colour so we recommend top coating your test area to view the final appearance.
Gloss Level
Matt
When used to create a one step stain and varnish, the gloss level will be that of the clear.
Coats
1 (or more as desired)
When used to create a one step stain and varnish, refer to the clear finish for the required number of coats.
Coverage
10 to 20 square metres per litre when used neat or diluted with Prooftint Colour Reducer. If mixed with other products, use coverage rate applicable to those products.
Surface Preparation
-
Prior to application, ensure the timber surface is dry and free from any traces of dust, dirt, glue, wax, grease and oil. Punch all nail heads below the surface and fill holes and defects with Feast Watson Timberfill wood putty, noting that a blend of several colours may be required to match the timber colouring.
-
When staining interior timber other than floors, if the grain is open or very coarse apply one coat of Feast Watson Sanding Sealer and when thoroughly dry, sand off back to bare timber.
-
Sand new bare timber with a medium grit and then fine grit paper, thoroughly removing sanding dust by sweeping and vacuuming between each sanding grade. For previously coated surfaces, ensure that the old finish is completely removed by first sanding with a coarse paper, then sand as for new bare timber.
-
Seal porous timber, such as Pine, with one coat of Feast Watson Prooftint Pine Sealer prior to staining. Use Feast Watson Proofseal on oily timbers. Both will ensure an even absorption rate of the stain and easier application, allowing you to achieve a professional finish. If using China Wood Oil we recommend large areas and porous timber are sealed with one coat of untinted China Wood Oil before staining with a Prooftint/China Wood Oil mixture. If opting to use Prooftint neat on large areas such as floors, ensure the timber is sealed with Prooftint Pine Sealer, or Proofseal if oily, prior to staining.
Application
Staining small areas
-
Apply Prooftint with a brush or cloth, ensuring that the product is evenly distributed over the area to be stained. Allow approximately 2-5 minutes for the stain to penetrate the surface before wiping off the excess with a clean, soft cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain. Ensure the edges of adjoining sections are carefully blended together by evenly wiping the overlap area.
-
Once thoroughly dry, preserve the stain with Feast Watson Floorseal, Satinproof, Weatherproof, Scandinavian Oil or Flatproof. The clear topcoat ensures lasting protection and fully develops the final colour.
Staining large areas
-
We recommend Prooftint is diluted with Prooftint Colour Reducer when staining large areas, such as floors or bench tops, to allow more time to evenly distribute the stain and achieve a uniform appearance. Add Prooftint to Prooftint Colour Reducer at the required mixing ratio to achieve your desired colour and strength. 1 part Prooftint mixed with 1 part Prooftint Colour Reducer will provide approximately half the strength of colour. Darker colours can be obtained with additional coats or by adding more Prooftint to the mix. For lighter shades dilute Prooftint further with Prooftint Colour Reducer.
-
If using Feast Watson China Wood Oil, add up to 10% Prooftint directly to the oil and use this mixture to stain the timber.
-
Apply the mixture with a brush and Feast Watson Floor Finish Applicator and lambswool sock, ensuring that the product is evenly distributed over the area to be stained. To achieve an uniform finish, cut around the edges and corners with a narrow brush as you go, as opposed to cutting in the whole area first. To avoid lap marks and double build, begin at one edge and follow through to a natural break such as a door, window or corner. When staining floors, stain 2-3 boards at a time, moving the full length of the board.
-
Allow approximately 2-5 minutes for the stain to penetrate the surface before wiping off the excess with a clean, soft cloth. Ensure that the edges of adjoining sections are carefully blended together by evenly wiping the overlap area. Take care to wipe in the direction of the grain when removing excess.
-
Once thoroughly dry, preserve the stain and provide the durability required for high wear areas by sealing with Feast Watson Floorseal, Floorproof or Floorclear.
-
Note: Do not add Prooftint directly to Floorproof or Floorclear.
-
One step stain and varnish
-
Up to 10% Prooftint may be added to Feast Watson Weatherproof, Satinproof, Flatproof or Scandinavian Oil, for use as a one step stain and varnish. Apply the varnish stain by brush and allow to dry. Do not wipe off excess.
Clean Up
Methylated Spirits when used neat and mixed with Prooftint Colour Reducer. When mixed with other products, use cleaning solvent applicable to those products. Soak cloths used to remove excess stain in water prior to disposal.
